The third leaders' debate devolved into a playground spat with both sides hurling 'liar' accusations. Meanwhile, voters search for policies amidst the name-calling.

Australia tuned in for the third leaders' debate hoping for substance and maybe—just maybe—a policy. Instead, we got a live-action reboot of Mean Girls: Canberra Edition. Anthony Albanese and Peter Dutton took turns playing “No, you’re the liar” while dodging anything resembling actual solutions.

Viewers came for policy but left with popcorn salt in their eyes and whiplash from the mutual finger-pointing. Albanese accused Dutton of “fearmongering,” Dutton responded by calling Labor’s promises “fantasy fiction,” and at no point did anyone define a single budget number. It was less a debate and more a duel of denial, with truth fleeing the stage early and possibly requesting asylum.

One brave voter asked, “So… what’s actually the plan?” and was promptly escorted off camera by security—presumably for speaking common sense. Sources: The Guardian Australia (23 Apr 2025), ABC News (23 Apr 2025), SBS News (23 Apr 2025)
