Xi's Chilling Message to America as Beijing Prepares for War

Chinese President Xi Jinping delivers a stark warning to the United States during his visit to Southeast Asia, signaling escalating tensions between the two superpowers.

If Xi Jinping had a love language, it’d be "militarised passive aggression." This week, the Chinese President effectively told the PLA: stop polishing your boots and start prepping for battle. In a not-so-subtle move, Xi ordered a total rewrite of China's military regulations to focus on—you guessed it—winning wars.

Translation: the days of peacekeeping PR are over; it’s combat-readiness time, baby. While Western democracies argue about TikTok bans and budget surpluses, China’s been building what satellite nerds now call the “Beijing Military City”—a suspiciously massive, heavily fortified command complex with enough underground tunnels to make a Bond villain jealous.

Oh, and it’s conveniently located next to Beijing, just in case you were hoping this was about “regional defence.” Xi didn’t mince words during his recent chat with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen either. He accused the U.S. of trying to trick China into invading Taiwan—because apparently Beijing now believes Washington is playing geopolitical Uno with bait cards.

Spoiler: Xi says he’s not falling for it, but the PLA sure is running plenty of "non-invasion" drills just offshore. Meanwhile, Admiral Samuel Paparo of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command is somewhere screaming into a void. He just told the press that China’s naval production is now triple that of America’s and that the constant “exercises” around Taiwan are starting to look less like routine training and more like dress rehearsals for act one.

So, in case it wasn’t clear: diplomacy is on life support, underground bunkers are in vogue, and we may or may not be watching the slow-motion opening scene of the next Cold War. Sources: Business Insider, Economic Times India, Taipei Times (April 2025)
